After pitching a scoreless first inning Friday, Sonny Gray chatted with Trevor Bauer in the dugout about something that surprised him.
The Pittsburgh Pirates weren’t swinging at his curveball. Gray felt like he threw two good ones in a two-strike count to Josh Bell, who held up a check swing and drew a walk in an eight-pitch at-bat.
“I was like, ‘Man, I feel like I threw that dude some good curveballs and he just spit on them. I feel like I’ve got a good curveball tonight, but he wasn’t swinging at it, so why?’” Gray told Bauer.
