MILWAUKEE — The running joke in the press box the last month or so is that whenever Cincinnati Reds rookie Elly De La Cruz reaches base on a single or walk, somebody says, “another double.”
Then came his opposite-field flare to left that drove in TJ Friedl from third base for a go-ahead run with two out in the seventh against the Milwaukee Brewers.
And what came next was laughable beyond anything that could have been uttered in a press box — with De La Cruz pulling off another first-in-a-century, awe-inspiring spectacle on the bases.
After the single, De La Cruz stole second and third on successive pitches — then stole home before inattentive pitcher Elvis Peguero threw another one.
