GOODYEAR, Ariz. – On June 29 last season in a game against the San Diego Padres, Cincinnati Reds reliever Ryan Hendrix fell behind 2-0 in the count against Padres outfielder Tommy Pham.
Needing a strike in the top of the fourth inning, Hendrix saw an opportunity to throw a fastball low in the strike zone. Pham hit a 390 foot home run to right field. His line drive was 103 mph off the bat, and Pham gave the Padres a 4-1 lead.
When Hendrix learned that the Reds were on the verge of signing Pham this week, he flashed back to that at-bat.
