Tom Browning won 20 games in a season, pitched a perfect game and helped win a World Series in the major leagues, but never while growing up in upstate New York did he experience the thrill some local high school players have experienced in the past and will again this year – competing at that age on a major league field.
“We didn’t have any fancy places,” the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame left-hander said Wednesday. “That would’ve been a dream come true.”
Browning can only envy players from 10 local high school teams who will play in five games at Great American Ball Park during “Big League Weekend” April 26-27, an annual highlight of the Skyline Chili Reds Futures High School Showcase.
