ETOBICOKE, Ontario –– It’s already been 20 years since Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto dunked on these rims as a high school basketball player. But Votto isn’t ready to stop playing in the gymnasium at his old high school in his hometown.
On a handful of Wednesdays during the offseason, Votto plays pickup basketball at the Richview Collegiate Institute, which is 20 minutes outside of Toronto. He runs with the team. He chirps with the players. He gets into the game.
Even though Votto went on to become a six-time All-Star in MLB, he never forgot where his athletic career took off.
