When the Cincinnati Reds got Eugenio Suárez in December of 2015 from the Detroit Tigers, they hoped they were getting a good player. Suárez was known as a glove-first shortstop. He had never cracked Baseball America's top 100 prospect list or shown much power.
No one knew they were getting what they got: An MLB All-Star, an MVP candidate and one of the anchors of the franchise going forward.
Well, except maybe Suárez.
