ST. LOUIS – When Jim Riggleman walked away from the Washington Nationals manager’s job in the middle of the season, it looked like his long baseball career could be in jeopardy.
The Nationals were 38-37 at the time and in third place in the National League East. Riggleman had taken over as interim manager in 2009. He went 33-42 that year and 69-93 in 2010.
He thought he should be rewarded with a two-year contract. When the Nationals offered one year, he quit.
"I know I'm not Casey Stengel, but I do feel like I know what I'm doing,” he said at the time.
