Of all the University of Akron athletic programs affected by the coronavirus pandemic and the subsequent closures as the result of it, none may be more affected than the baseball team.
After being disbanded nearly five years ago, the team’s full resurrection came this year when the Zips played their first game in February. The team is young, raw and lacking Division I playing experience. They won’t get any more this season.
The Zips recently won their first game – beating Marshall – and were in the midst of a series against Urbana when coach Chris Sabo received word the Mid-American Conference, in conjunction with the schools, decided to scrap athletics for the remainder of the academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
