PITTSBURGH – Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell, outfielder Yasiel Puig and relief pitcher Amir Garrett, along with Pittsburgh Pirates relievers Keone Kela and Felipe Vázquez, were ejected after a benches-clearing incident in the top of the fourth inning Sunday at PNC Park.
In apparent retaliation for staring at a home run in the second inning, Pirates starting pitcher Chris Archer threw a pitch behind Reds first baseman Derek Dietrich's back. Home-plate umpire Jeff Kellogg issued a warning to Archer after the ball flew to the backstop, but the benches and bullpens quickly cleared.
Bell argued with Kellogg before players from both teams started pushing and shoving each other around the mound.
