Despite rally in the 9th inning, Cincinnati Reds lose in extra innings to New York Mets

NEW YORK – New York Mets rookie Pete Alonso hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track Tuesday and he was showered with water and popcorn around the first base bag.

The Reds nearly stunned the Mets with their two-out, ninth-inning rally Tuesday, but they couldn’t survive extra innings in a 4-3 loss in 10 innings at Citi Field in front of 20,836 fans.

Mets pinch-hitter J.D. Davis opened the bottom of the 10th inning with a double off the left-field wall to end a 10-pitch at-bat against Reds closer Raisel Iglesias. Two batters later and Davis scored on Alonso’s sacrifice fly, which reached the warning track in right field.
