Derek Dietrich signs minor-league contract with Texas Rangers, per reports

Former Cincinnati Reds utilityman Derek Dietrich signed a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers a day after the Chicago Cubs released him, according to multiple reports.

The Rangers assigned Dietrich to their alternate training site.

The Cubs announced Sunday that they granted Dietrich his release so that he could pursue another opportunity.

Last month, Dietrich asked the Reds for his release when he wasn't placed on their roster. He signed with the Cubs later in the same week, but never received a call-up to Chicago's active roster.

He missed the first two weeks of the Reds' preseason camp after testing positive for COVID-19 in June.
