LOUISVILLE – The latest turn in Cody Reed’s zig-zagging career came on May 3, the most recent day he could call himself a big-leaguer.
The Cincinnati Reds left-hander was going on his seventh day without pitching. He was back in the bullpen, having choked in his only chance to start 11 days earlier. He’d pitched in just a single game since then, giving up a run and two walks over the course of two innings against the Milwaukee Brewers.
He existed only to pitch in emergency long relief, quite the demotion for a 24-year-old who a year earlier was tearing up Triple-A as the team’s top pitching prospect.
