PITTSBURGH – It looked like Cody Reed was trying to spot someone in a distant crowd.
He jutted his neck forward and squinted his eyes. Then he leaned back to widen his field of vision, raising his chin as if to look over the heads of passersby. Then forward again, squinting and bunching his nose as he probed for the right angle.
It was the eighth inning of Monday’s win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Cincinnati Reds left-hander could not see catcher Tucker Barnhart well enough to make out the signs. That would seem to be an odd problem for a player known for his eyewear on the mound.
