CHICAGO –– When Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Tyler Mahle thought about the fact that he used to throw a changeup, he laughed as he flashed back to the stage of his career where he was always making adjustments.
When Mahle was a rookie, his changeup was his No. 2 pitch behind his fastball. Now, he recognizes that he never knew when to throw it or whom to throw it to.
For his first four MLB seasons, Mahle kept trying to add new elements to his game, including a changeup, a curveball and a cutter. Now 111 games into his MLB career, Mahle believes he has figured out what the best version of himself as a pitcher looks like.
