Nearly 10 months ago, Dan Straily was traded from the Houston Astros to the San Diego Padres for a backup catcher, and almost immediately placed on waivers. After being claimed by the Cincinnati Reds, he proceeded to rebuild his value as a major-league pitcher.
He’s worth a lot more now, and the Reds know it. On Thursday, they traded the 28-year-old right-hander to the Miami Marlins for a prospect haul that some evaluators feel rival the four-player package the Reds received for Aroldis Chapman last winter.
In exchange for four years of control over the right-hander, the Marlins gave up pitching prospects Luis Castillo and Austin Brice and outfield prospect Isaiah White.
