Cincinnati Reds to sign Japanese outfielder Shogo Akiyama to a 3-year contract

After reaching an agreement with the Cincinnati Reds on a three-year deal last week, Japanese outfielder Shogo Akiyama is headed to the United State to complete a physical and finalize his contract, according to multiple Japanese news outlets.

Akiyama’s contract is expected to exceed $20 million over three years, according to a source. Teams that were in the running for Akiyama were informed last week that he had an agreement with the Reds, sources told The Enquirer.

The Reds don’t confirm signings until players pass their physicals, but a delay was expected because Akiyama needed to travel from Japan.
