With a win Wednesday, the Reds would have lost sole possession of last place in the National League Central for the first time since April 6.
But for the umpteenth time this season, they could not get over one hump or another. With a win over Pittsburgh Wednesday, the Reds would have caught the Pirates.
The Reds fell to the Pirates 7-2 before a crowd of 15,252 at Great American Ball Park. The Reds were shut out after scoring 55 runs in their last seven games. The game was delayed two hours, 13 minutes at the start.
