This Reds season depends largely on the young arms in the rotation.
Monday, the young arm in question was outstanding. The Reds rode rookie Tyler Mahle’s impressive season debut to a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs before a crowd of 18,963 on the chilly, breezy day at Great American Ball Park.
Mahle went six shutout innings and allowed one hit – which should have been an out (more on that later) – walked two and struck out seven.
Mahle threw only 86 pitches before he was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth.
Mahle, the 23-year-old right-hander, walked lan Happ to start the first.
