Amir Garrett and Phillip Ervin, the only two African-American players on the Reds roster, took a knee during the national anthem before Friday’s Opening Day game against the Detroit Tigers.
Joey Votto, who knelt during the anthem before the Tuesday exhibition game against the Tigers, stood during the anthem Friday.
Five Detroit players and a coach knelt: Niko Goodrum, Christin Stewart, Jeimer Candelario, Cameron Maybin, Joe Jimenez and coach Phil Clark.
Garrett said before spring training, he planned to be active in speaking out against racism, saying he should have done more in the wake of Colin Kaepernick taking a knee in 2016.
