Cincinnati Reds place 1B Joey Votto on the 10-day disabled list with a leg injury

After being hit by a pitch earlier this month, Joey Votto was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a right lower leg contusion, the Reds announced.

It is the first time Votto has been on the disabled list since 2014.

The All-Star first baseman was hit by a pitch in the second game of a doubleheader against the Washington Nationals on Aug. 4 near his right knee. Votto said he had "no idea" whether the pitch from Nationals reliever Ryan Madson was intentional, though he yelled in Madson's direction from first base.

"Getting hit is a part of the game,” Votto said the following day.
