Communicating with pitchers through messages on WhatsApp, Cincinnati Reds pitching coach Derek Johnson is emphasizing improvisation during Major League Baseball’s hiatus.

He made a tutorial about how to tie tubing to fences for a shoulder warmup and arm exercises, and how to set up a net for pitchers. It reminded him of some of his college coaching days when he created homemade weighted balls. He’d cut a hole in a tennis ball and fill it with BBs until it reached the weight he wanted.
