Cincinnati Reds notes: David Bell excited for Tony La Russa; why Sonny Gray didn't start

GOODYEAR, Arizona – David Bell remembers what it was like to play under Tony La Russa when he was 22 years old and beginning his 12-year Major League Baseball career.

When he looks inside the opposing dugout during Thursday’s spring training game against the Chicago White Sox, he’ll see La Russa watching the game from the top step.

The White Sox hired the 76-year-old La Russa in October, 35 years after La Russa was fired by the White Sox.

“Looking back to 1995, a player for him and now getting the opportunity to manage against him is something that will be really cool for me,” said Bell, who is entering his third season with the Reds.
