Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell helps Texas Rangers secure pitching coach Julio Rangel

Julio Rangel was hired by the Texas Rangers earlier this month as new manager Chris Woodward's pitching coach, but it apparently wouldn't have happened without an assist from the Cincinnati Reds' new manager David Bell.

Rangel had agreed to be the Reds' bullpen coach earlier this offseason before the Rangers offered him their pitching coach position, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Rangers GM Jon Daniels said he pursued Rangel because Bell spoke highly of him when he interviewed for Texas' managerial opening.

The 43-year-old Rangel was the Giants' minor league pitching coordinator this past season.
