The Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals had a 17-minute, 30-second injury delay during the bottom of the first inning Wednesday after home-plate umpire Chris Conroy was struck by a foul ball on his right hand.
Shogo Akiyama, the Reds' leadoff hitter, fouled the sixth pitch of his at-bat backward. The ball struck Conroy near his right ring finger. His finger started bleeding and he was examined by Reds trainers Steve Baumann and Tomas Vera with umpires Larry Vanover and Jeff Nelson standing nearby.
After Conroy had his finger pressed in a towel for about two minutes, he walked with Baumann into the Reds' dugout and down the tunnel to the trainer's room.
