Cincinnati Reds can't get that big hit in a 5-3 loss; rookie right-hander Tyler Mahle only lasts 3 1/3 innings

SAN FRANCISCO — It was just the kind of game the Reds were winning on the six-game winning streak. The bullpen kept it close enough that some late-inning runs would have been the difference.

But the Reds could not get that big hit.

The result was a 5-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants Tuesday before a crowd of 37,809 at AT&T Park on a typical chilly night beside the bay. The Reds were 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Rookie right-hander Tyler Mahle (3-5) had the shortest outing of his big league career. He went 3 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.
