ST. LOUIS – There have been several special starts during Hunter Greene’s rookie season, but Saturday’s performance against the St. Louis Cardinals left his teammates and coaches buzzing about it afterward.
Facing a top National League contender, one of the best lineups in the league, Greene just simply dominated. Hitters couldn’t catch up his elevated fastball, which averaged 101 mph. He drew whiffs on nearly half his sliders.
“As good as we’ve seen this year,” Paul Goldschmidt, who struck out three times, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
A lot of Greene’s success came through his elevated fastballs, breaking velocity records since pitch-tracking data was collected in 2008.
