Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake is the first major league player to opt out of the shortened 2020 season.
The details surrounding Leake’s decision are unknown as D-backs GM Mike Hazen would not share reasons that Leake gave him.
"I think those conversations are personal in nature," Hazen said, per the Arizona Republic.
Leake, 32, was listed on the Diamondbacks’ 60-player pool that the club released earlier on Monday. He was scheduled to make $5.6 million during the prorated portion of this year. Players who are considered high risk or cohabitate with a high-risk individual, such as a pregnant spouse, can opt out and be paid with service time.
