Amir Garrett unafraid to speak out about racial inequality issues: 'The time is now'

A few days before traveling to Cincinnati for preseason workouts last week, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Amir Garrett wrote a message on Twitter to his 34,000 followers.

He wrote that he’s received a lot of backlash for speaking out about police brutality and racial issues on social media. People want him to stick to sports and ignore sharing his views about what’s going on in the world.

“They value me as an athlete but not as a person,” Garrett tweeted. “This is where the problem starts. As an athlete, we must have a platform. We have a voice that a lot of others don’t.
