When Amir Garrett chose to kneel during the national anthem before two exhibition games and on Opening Day, he anticipated some backlash.
Garrett knew there would be people who saw it as disrespecting the flag or the military. It’s still viewed as a controversial form of silent protest. But he felt like it was something that he had to do. He’s passionate about raising awareness of racial inequality issues.
He spoke with his family before he knelt for the first time. His brother, uncle and grandfather served in the military, so he wanted to make sure people close to him understood his decision.
