Alonzo Powell, who became the San Francisco Giants' new hitting coach last November after two seasons as the Houston Astros' hitting coach, underwent prostate cancer surgery Tuesday, and there's an encouraging update via Twitter from reporter Andrew Baggarly.
Powell managed the Chattanooga Lookouts - the Reds' Double-A team at the time - in 2002 and 2003. He managed the Dayton Dragons - the Reds' Class A Midwest League team - in 2004 and 2005.
Baggarly wrote for the Athletic earlier this week about Powell landing his dream job in his hometown of San Francisco just weeks before his prostate cancer diagnosis.
