Former Cincinnati Reds play-by-play broadcaster Al Michaels was named Wednesday as the winner of 2021 Ford C. Frick Award, presented annually by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown to a broadcaster for "major contributions to baseball."
Michaels came to Cincinnati in 1971 and was replaced in the Reds' broadcast booth in 1974 by Marty Brennaman.
Michaels is the second former Reds play-by-play broadcaster in three years to win the award. Al Helfer, who did play-by-play for the Reds from 1935 to 1937, won the 2019 Frick Award.
Michaels sent a tribute to Brennaman in Sept.
