Al Helfer, the Cincinnati Reds' play-by-play broadcaster from 1935 to 1937, won the 2019 Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in broadcasting, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced Wednesday.
Helfer, who died in 1975, will be recognized on July 20 of next year in Cooperstown, New York, as part of the Hall's induction weekend.
Waite Hoyt, a long-time Reds broadcaster inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a player in 1969, was among eight finalists for the 2019 Frick Award. Hoyt was the play-by-play man for the Reds from 1942 until 1965.
