The Cincinnati Reds dealt Todd Frazier to the Chicago White Sox less than a month ago, as part of a three-team deal involving the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was a sign that Reds are going all-in on their rebuild, as Frazier was one of their best players. Reds fans shouldn't be happy about the move,
Fan Favorite
Frazier is beloved by Reds fans and for good reason. He loves Cincinnati and didn't want to leave the city. "The Toddfather" won the Home Run Derby in Cincinnati this season, which only endeared him even more to the city. Fans never like it when their favorite players leave and Reds' supporters have every right to be upset over his trading.
Didn't Get Enough
If the Reds are going to deal one of the best third baseman in the MLB, who is young and under team control for several seasons, then the Reds need to get a lot back. They failed to do so, and that's a big reason why Reds should be upset. The Reds received Jose Peraza, Brandon Dixon and Scott Schebler in the trade. Peraza was the player the Reds really wanted, and the team will likely plug him in at 2B if/when it deals Brandon Phillips. There are doubts around the league that Peraza will be as good as the Reds think he will be. Dixon might not ever make it to the majors, while Schebler looks more like a fourth OF than a starter. The best prospect in the deal went to the Dodgers, as they got Frankie Montas in the trade. The Reds needed to get more for Frazier and their failure to do so should upset fans.
It Was The Right Move
The Reds made the right decision to deal Frazier, as he would be past his prime by the time the Reds' rebuild is complete. That means the Reds correctly traded him for players that will help the team win in the future. It's the right call, but it doesn't mean Reds fans can't be upset about it. It's a message from the front office that the team isn't good enough to win right now. That's not a fun or happy message and it's one that should upset fans. Winning is always the goal of a franchise and it wasn't long ago that the team was in the playoffs. To go from playoff contention to rebuilding should upset any fan base.
