It is only the fifth game in the Bengals-Steelers rivalry and already it is at full boil with Steelers head coach Chuck Noll working against his former coach when he played in Cleveland in Bengals’ head man Paul Brown. Noll takes over a down-and-out club in 1969 and is slowly building a dynasty with a rising young quarterback in Terry Bradshaw and a fast, brutal defense that will become known as “The Steel Curtain.” Brown is working much the same formula in Cincinnati with second-year quarterback Ken Anderson and a defense boasting two No. 1 picks on the defensive line in Mike Reid and Sherman White to go with a pair of second-rounders in Ron Carpenter at tackle and Bill Bergey at middle linebacker The Steelers climb to 6-8 last season, after one- and five-win seasons under Noll, and have the 4-10 Bengals for two of those wins.
