The Bengals lose yesterday’s Super Bowl XVI to the 49ers in the Pontiac Silverdome but they continue to win over a generation of fans as evidenced by today’s roaring downtown welcome at Fountain Square during an early afternoon rally. Despite sub-freezing temperatures, an estimated crowd of 3,500 gather to chant “Next year,” and “Pasadena,” site of Super Bowl XVII. As they bus from the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, the grateful players can see waving fans clustered to the side of I-75. If they haven’t realized the 1981 AFC champions have given birth to the modern mania of Bengaldom, they do now.
