The white suburban guy in the pickup truck cruised the avenues of Mt. Auburn until he found the black 10-year-old he was looking for. “Monty!’’ he yelled at a boy riding a bicycle.
“Yes, sir," Monty answered “What are you doing here?"
“Hop in. You’re spending the weekend with us," said Jim Stofko. “Yes, sir," said Monty Madaris Jr.
That’s how it started, 15 years ago. A reach across the great divide. The Madarises from Mt. Auburn met the Stofkos from Montgomery. Unique situations happened, some trying, some harrowing, some very close to perfect.
