Cincinnati Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons said he believes a team needs to draft a kicker or a punter one round earlier than you think you should. For the second time in the last five years, the Bengals took the first kicker in the NFL Draft.
In the fifth round, the Bengals drafted Florida kicker Evan McPherson, who Simmons said he "fully expects" to be the starter.
After losing last season's starter in free agency, the Bengals selected McPherson with their fifth round pick on Saturday. While kicker Austin Seibert will also compete for the starting spot in 2021, McPherson will have the opportunity to start right away for the Bengals this season.
