Unwilling to gamble with kicker Randy Bullock’s cranky back the Bengals chose to make another gamble Saturday before they left for Jacksonville when they signed a first-year player looking for his first NFL points. The Bengals waived three-year back-up safety Derron Smith to make room for Marshall Koehn and either Koehn or Bullock are going to be active.
Smith hasn’t played in the last four games with an ankle injury after performing largely on special teams in 31 of the previous 35 games.
The 6-0, 200-pound Koehn signed with Miami as a college free agent out of Iowa in 2016, playing in three of the Dolphins’ preseason games before being waived.
