Former University of Cincinnati and Auburn head football coach Tommy Tuberville won election to the U.S. Senate Tuesday night, defeating Democratic incumbent Doug Jones with pledges of loyalty to President Donald Trump.
As of 9:11 p.m., Tuberville had 594,368 votes (62%) in incomplete, unofficial returns. Jones had 368,401 votes (38%). The Associated Press called the race at 9:11 p.m. Tuesday.
The first-time candidate's campaign focused on Tuberville pledging his loyalty to President Donald Trump, and his victory speech repeated that theme.
"I want to thank President Donald Trump," Tuberville said in an 18-minute speech. "He is without a doubt in my lifetime the guy who’s done more for the United States of America than any other man.
