Dontonio Wingfield’s rags-to-riches-and-back story is familiar to anyone who follows games and the people who play them. Hard knocks to high living, followed by the inevitable fall. The human sports cliché. The real stories happen in the aftermath.
You remember Wingfield: Six-foot-seven, 260 pounds, with a pro’s body and a guard’s touch. We called him Baby Shaq. Wingfield arrived at UC in 1993 as Bob Huggins’ best recruit to date, one of the top players in a class that also included Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace.
Wingfield played a year at UC, averaging 16 points and seven rebounds.
