Yermin Mercedes received recognition for his record-setting start Monday as the Chicago White Sox designated hitter was named American League Player of the Week for the period of April 1-4.
He became the first player in major-league history to start a season with eight consecutive hits, breaking the previous mark of seven set by the Cincinnati Reds’ Chris Stynes in 2007, according to Elias.
Mercedes, 28, went 5-for-5 with a double and four RBIs on Friday night in his first major-league start. He began Saturday’s game at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., with three consecutive hits, including his first career home run.
