In the past 48 hours, David Robertson has gotten his 34th and 35th saves of the season as the White Sox defeated the Detroit Tigers two games in a row. Sure, the horse is long gone, but keep slamming that barn door — it feels good.
It’s refreshing to see “save” without the word “blown” in front of it, given that Robertson has struggled mightily in the second half of the season with his command, sending his walks and strikeout counts in the wrong direction. He’s shown improvement since a horrendous July in which he gave up eight runs in 9 2/3 innings, but every time he takes the mound, I can’t help but wonder if the end result will be the further closing of a trade window that already seems pretty well shut because he’s been revealed as a transient star, like so many closers before him.
