White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu added nearly 280,000 All-Star votes in the last week, but Astros counterpart Yuli Gurriel has narrowed the lead, according to Major League Baseball's update Monday.
Abreu was a front-runner in the American League race from the start, the first Sox player to lead at any stage of the balloting process since Frank Thomas did it in 1996.
Last week Abreu led Gurriel by more than 318,000 votes, but as of Monday his advantage was down to more than 224,000 — 1,312,221 for Abreu and 1,088,068 for Gurriel.
