Chris Sale needed one strikeout to tie his single-season high of 226 Wednesday night at U.S. Cellular Field, and it came at a rather critical moment against the Red Sox.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning, the White Sox left-hander struck out Hanley Ramirez with a 98 mph fastball to strand the Red Sox runners in a scoreless game.
He finished with seven strikeouts in seven scoreless innings to bring his season total to 229, ranked fifth-highest in White Sox history. His previous best of 226 came in 2013, while Ed Walsh set the Sox record of 269 in 1908.
