The White Sox released 2009 first-rounder Jared Mitchell from Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday morning.
Taken with the 23rd overall pick, Mitchell, who played football and baseball at Louisiana State University, hit .226/.334/.381 over six minor league seasons for the White Sox. He was only 2-for-40 in 13 games at Charlotte this season.
Mitchell — who had been outrighted of the team’s 40-man roster in November — started his career well, hitting .296/.417/.435 at Single-A Kannapolis in 2009. But he suffered a devastating ankle injury the following spring and never really got back on track.
