The White Sox placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation Thursday, just seven games into the season.
The Sox purchased the contract of catcher Kevan Smith from Triple-A Charlotte to take his place.
Soto was scratched from Wednesday’s game against the Indians after arriving at the ballpark and complaining of a sore elbow, Sox manager Rick Renteria said.
He was 4-for-15 with three home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored over five games this season with the Sox since joining the team on a minor-league deal in January.
