White Sox part ways with Brett Lawrie after injuries mar promising start

It’s not quite up to their old standards, but there is surprising news from White Sox spring camp yet again. The Sox announced Friday that they are requesting waivers for last year’s Opening Day second baseman Brett Lawrie for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.

Lawrie looked like a possible non-tender candidate this offseason after missing the last 2 1/2 months of the 2016 season with nagging left leg issues, but when he settled on a surprisingly low $3.5 million contract for this year and reported to camp, he still looked to be the presumptive starter.

In a very detailed explanation, Lawrie, whose last game was on July 21, blamed last year’s injuries on orthotics that he says he has since ditched, but has been kept out of action this spring with more leg issues, and now he’s gone entirely.
