White Sox jump to a big lead in their home opener after Mariners shortstop commits 3 errors in 1 inning

The Mariners entered Friday’s game on the South Side with baseball’s best record. They were 7-1 — no joke.

And then their shortstop, Tim Beckham, committed three errors. In the first inning.

That inning lasted 31 minutes and yielded a 3-1 lead for the Sox in their home opener, played on a 44-degree day under an overcast sky.

Reynaldo Lopez struck out the Mariners’ first two batters before giving up an opposite-field homer to Domingo Santana, who blasted one into the new Goose Island area in right.
