On Oct. 21, the White Sox officially hired Chris Getz as their director of player development. For a team that loves to hire its old players, this wasn’t exactly breaking new ground. But it wasn’t exactly telegraphed either.
Getz, 33, was a fourth-round pick of the White Sox in 2005 and made his debut on April 28, 2008. By the next year, he was the starting second baseman (100 starts) on a team that flirted with contention before finishing with a sub-.500 record.
After one full season (107 games) with the Sox in 2009, he was traded with third baseman Josh Fields for utility man Mark Teahen that November to Kansas City, where he played 332 games over four seasons before a brief stint with the Toronto Blue Jays.
