The White Sox purchased the contract of left-hander Matt Purke from Triple-A Charlotte before Friday’s series opener against the Yankees.
Purke takes the roster spot of right-hander Scott Carroll, who was designated for assignment Thursday.
Purke, who joined the Sox on a minor-league contract in the offseason, has a 2.30 ERA with eight walks and 14 strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings in 10 appearances. He has no major-league experience.
The Sox also officially requested waivers to release John Danks, a formality after the club designated him for assignment last week, ending his 10-year tenure with the Sox.
